A Case Study of Gap Moe
In anime, There is this thing called gap moe, use to describe a contradiction in characters, typically means unexpected cuteness. It’s used in many anime shows to create cute or endearing characters that the audiences can root for.
For Example, if a serious character, who is always serious all the time, do something way out of his characters like being nerdy, we would call this unexpectancy in characters, gap moe. This is called contrast in personality, a form of gap moe.
Another form of gap moe is when a character with less than appealing appearance, they usually have intimidating and scary appearance even sometimes monster-ish, acted in a way that contrasts with their disgusting/unpleasant looks, which create a contrast between appearance and personality.
There are many forms of gap moe that I could talk about for hours, but these are the two forms of gap moe that I like to focus on today discussion about the importance of gap moe in making unsavory characters seem cute, and how it changed our perception of the character.
Contrast in personality
This is the most popular form of gap moe.
It usually takes a character that is either mess up in the head or serious type and applies cute behavior to them, which in turn make them moe.
Let me give you some example to illustrate my point.
You might see a lot of tsundere in anime well, is a perfect example of gap moe. Tsundere might act tough or sometimes cold, they usually hide their feeling in their mind, often denying it, but occasionally they let their behavior slide through the crack, showing their cute and endearing nature. That creates a gap in characters, which make them adorable.
Takao has a crush toward the MC, Kazama, but she often denies it. However, each time that she did, she would always contradict herself through her actions, her behavior often gets in the way of her feeling. In some instant, she would deny her interest in Kazama by ignoring it or dodging it, but she is shy, embarrassed and oddly excited when someone mentions Kazama or when she spends time with him. She treasures Kazama’s gift even though she says that she is uninterested in it. It’s this contrast between her word and her action, which make her cute. She is a tsundere, but she leans more on the dere rather than the tsun. Rather than being violent like most tsundere, she only tsun in her constant denial of her feeling, which it a weak contrast but it still enough for her to be perceived as a case of gap moe.
Taiga Aisaka from Toradora
Taiga also has a feeling for the MC of the show, but her violent tendency tends to get in the way. Even though she is very violent, she has a soft childish side that makes her adorable. She is a hard nut, often prefer to use violence to solve her problem, but sometimes there are cracks in her persona which reveal her true intention and feeling. She much rather hide her feeling than telling the one she loved, often hide behind a facade. Her strong contrast between her violent tendency and caring nature, making her endearing toward many people who watch the shows.
Rosarita Cisneros from Black Lagoon
For those who don’t know, Roberta is a cold hearted assassin. While she is scary most of the time, she occasionally do cute thing which is horrifyingly moe.
There are also many deres that derived from the same principle as Tsundere, their contrast in characters.
Like Kuudere ( Contrast between their cool demeanor and their behavior).
Hitagi Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari
Senjougahara might be cold and threaten everyone who comes close but she secretly is a very kind and gentle girl. When Araragi saves her from her inner monsters, she falls in love with him and started to show more of her kind nature more and more. Even though she still threaten people, she slowly shows more emotions and ultimately become a better person overall after her encounter with Araragi. Although she doesn’t show it to Araragi, she cares for him very much. That is cute.
Dandere ( Contrast in how they act in public versus how they act when close to their crush).
Hyuga Hinata from Naruto
While Hinata might be a shy and quiet girl, she becomes very proactive when she is near her crush, Naruto. What started out as simply admiration soon turn into pure love and help Hinata to slowly come out of her shell. Through her interaction with Naruto, she becomes less shy, and is able to express herself more. For her love to be recognized by Naruto, she had to try her hardest and improving herself. That is endearing.
Yandere ( Contrast in their psychotic behavior and loving nature).
Yuno Gasai From Mirai Nikki
She might be perceived as “innocent and cute” by many people by her action at first, but when people started approaching Yukiteru, she started to lose it. She only acts cute in front of her crush, and everyone else either got the ax or knife if they tried to get close to her beloved Yuki. When all else fail, she even kidnapping her crush to stop him from contacting other people. That is cute in a terrifying kind of way.
Their contrast is what made them cute and endearing or perceives as lovable.
[Why do many authors have these “dere” in their story?
From my understanding, many authors use these characteristics as a way to establish characters before you even know them. It’s might be used to build a character without much work since most people are aware of these character archetype. It’s might serve as a foundation for authors to build their characters up. It’s easy to use an existing template for characters that have existed before rather than building one from the ground up and they have been around for a long, people can’t recognize and identify a character easily without needing their backstory. Many authors have used these trope to great or bad effect, creating compelling characters using the trope as a foundation or creating characters based on existing character traits and never bother to develop them more than that.
While you might not like how these trope as used so constantly and in any media form, It’s important to state that they have an important role in characters creating and world creating. When creating a mob character that is meant to have a minor part in the story or meant to be killed off to show the condition, the grimness, and the impending state of the world, to show a serious a situation, to create tension, the author may use these type of characters to quickly show their characters and make the reader recognize them from the outlook. It’s common tactics for the artist to use to show the danger of the world without taking too much time or mess up plot points. It can be both a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you use it. When creating side characters, it’s easy to use an existing character personality to save time on developing said characters.
It’s an important part of anime, as we can see from its history. These tropes have existed in anime for a long time, and it is easy to see why. These characters are made to appeal to the general populous of anime fans, who have been custom to these tropes. They are characters that have work before and are general well-received by the community as a whole, because of this, inserting of these characteristics can help bring in potential watchers and readers. We are familiar with these characters because we have been exposed to it for a long time. While some might get tired of the character types, but it is still a good way for people to get attached to characters.
It has always been a part of anime and will continue to be so until a new character archetype is created.]
Contrast in Appearance
This type of gap moe is more uncommon compared to personality disparity.
It usually plays with your expectation of a character, mostly using their appearance to trick the audience. It subverts of expectation of what a character in opposite to how they act might give watchers a spook but ultimately will help the characters stay in the audience mind.
Galko from Please tell me! Galko-chan.
Based on the first image of Galko-san, what would you think her character would be like? Would she be a bad person? Would she behave like a bitch? Would she act like a total cunt?
Well, this show exists to smash that expectation of what a gyaru would be. Galko might seem like a typical gyaru but once you get to know her, she is the sweetest and the most wholesome girl, you would ever come across. The first introduced you to Galko in all of her heavy makeup and nail polish giving the impression that she might be a stuck-up person but as the series progress, we can see but she is very much the opposite of what her look let on. It creates a subvert of appearance that will input the image of a character in the audience mind, which help with the appeal of the show. That is adorable.
Sunao Nako from Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu.
While Nako might seem like a delinquent at first glance due to her appearance and overall fashion sense but she was the very first to make friend with Bocchi. Her speaking pattern might be a bit crude and could be considered rude but she only wants the best for people so she tells people straight what she thinks. It is this contrast between her appearance and her nature, her behavior compares to how she feels that make her quite an endearing individual. She helps Bocchi get more friends because of how caring she is.
On an extreme note, we got Ozen from Made in Abyss.
When we first met her, we might see her as a creepy lady due to her posture, appearance and action. But as we learn more about her, we can understand that even though her action was cruel and rough, it was well-intentioned. She, who has seen the Abyss in its full grotesque beauty, know about the danger of the Abyss. She was testing them to see if they are ready for the depth. She may be a weird one but her intention is well-meaning, creating a gap, which makes her endearing. That is cute in a weird way.
[Why are authors using these contrasts?
When creating characters that somehow have a less than unsavory appearances, it might be hard for the audience to connect to said characters, but with the simple trick of adding contrast between their appearance and their behavior or intention, the author can create a gap for the audience to fill in, which help with the longevity of a character. In another instance, authors might use these traits to pull on the audience heartstrings, help them to sympathy with the individual in the story.
Think back to Beauty and the Beast, these kinds of thing have existed for a long time even before anime ever come to the scene. It’s an easy way for an artist to create human out of a monster. It’s an easy way for the author to create sympathy for a certain character. Its purpose is to create a gap in their character for the audience to fill up, which help them to connect to said character.]
Why does » Gap Moe» matter in anime and why it’s important?
The important question of the day.
Well, thinking from an artists perspective, this is just a tool to make the characters in a story, more human and relatable. It’s an easy way for the author to add depth to characters, to breath life to them. This tool is so widely used that it’s kind of hard to imagine a story without them. Berserk’s protagonist, Guts, might seem like an angry guy but these tools help him feel like a human, not just characters. To not leave gap or contrast for a character, they might seem dull and overall just a boring characters to follow. There are even some mangas that utilizing the contrast as the whole premise of the story like That girl is not only cute, The Faceless Girl, etc. It’s an important part of any media. The gap in » gap moe» is a gap for the audience to build bridges to connect to the other side thus help the reader/watcher to connect with the characters. It’s an efficient tool in storytelling.
There is also reversed gap moe or «Wolf in sheep’s clothing» tropes that describe when a character act cute to hide their ugly nature but that is a topic for a different day.

Let’s look at the meaning of the words separately.
A quick google search tells us that a gap is a space or interval; a break in continuity. It can also mean to be a difference. Here is a post that addresses what moe is. If I were to describe it myself, it is the feeling you get when you see someone/something so cute you just want to hug them and take them home.
Combining the two, gap moe is that irresistible feeling you get when there is a difference in the way someone/something acts and/or looks. When that character acts/looks out of character.

Pictures speak louder than words. So here are a few examples:
This is Tohsaka Rin from the Fate series, and a tsundere. Tsunderes are probably the most common example of gap moe. To put it simply, tsunderes are characters who act all tsun around the one they love. Then they suddenly act all dere. If you feel moe when a tsundere starts acting all deredere, THAT is gap moe.
Speaking of tsunderes.
In Love Live!, Nishikino Maki is probably the most mature among the first years. However, she still believes in Santa! That gap between being mature and believing in something a child (and child at heart) would only believe, if you feel moe about that, THAT is gap moe.

So tldr; Gap moe is that moe feeling you experience when a character acts and/or looks in a way that contradicts the way they usually do.
Another reason gap moe is used is because it allows the reader/viewer to see the character as more than just a one dimensional figure, as in reality it is entirely possible for people to be caught off guard by people who act differently than expected.
The contradiction, when handled properly, makes perfect sense as the story progresses because while it does SEEM contradictory, it makes sense in hindsight when the given character’s story and personality is explored further.
Thus, gap moe is basically a product of a «hook, line, and sinker» that was executed to not only make a character attractive, but provides the writer a method of delving deeper into that character (as the reader/viewer’s attention is piqued and thus is unlikely to quickly reject the writer’s attempt at fleshing out the character).
Gap moe doesn’t have to be all about what lies underneath, but as an interesting fact about that character.
TL;DR Gap moe is a way of the author saying «here’s something interesting about this character that is going to be fleshed out later on» or «here’s an interesting fact» which generates interest as it makes the character more realistic.

Что такое ГЭП и как с этим стоит работать (стоит ли??)
Гэп (англ. gap) — ценовой разрыв на графике цены. Чаще всего он появляется из-за неторгового времени между сессиями, когда поступает новая информация, но рынки закрыты и участники не могут оперативно заложить ее в котировки. Цена открытия следующей сессии значительно отличается от цены закрытия предыдущего дня и на графике образуется гэп. Гэп также образуется из за дивидендов — дивидендный гэп. Как правило размер гэпа = размер дивиденда, выплаченного по инструменту.
В трейдерском сообществе бытует мнение, что ценовой гэп должен быть закрыт, то есть цена через некоторое время должна вернуться к ценам до разрыва. На самом деле это наполовину миф. Не все гэпы закрываются, например у той же акции Starbucks имеется гэпы, которые еще не закрыты (с 2008 года, гэп на 16). Дивидендные гэпы как правило закрывают, а вот новостные долгое время могут не закрывать. Некоторые акции очень долго закрывают див гэпы, тот же Сургут АО около 2-х лет не мог закрыть гэп.
Другим негативным моментом является то, что перед закрытием гэпа цена может достаточно глубоко уйти в противоположном направлении перед возвращением к прежним ценам. Например те же гэпы у акций INTC, CSCO, AYX и т.д. Они пока не спешат закрываться, так как это новостные / отчетные гэпы и сейчас акции идут в противоположную сторону, чтобы высадить весь народ, который поверил в быстрое закрытие гэпа.
Если появился у акции див гэп и фон очень позитивный на рынке, то акция может быстро закрыть гэп. Та же акция Сургут АП закрыла свой гэп за день, так как в тот момент падал рубль, а Сургут АП имеет сильную долларовую подушку.
Определенно при позитивном фоне стоит торговать акции, которые упали после дивов, но если фон неблагоприятен, то акцию могут топить вниз. Если плохой отчет у акции и появился 10% гэп вниз, то не стоит брать сразу. Отскок будет, но потом с большей долей вероятности продолжиться падение.
