How to Move Apps Out of the Applications Folder in Mac OS X
Have you noticed when you try and move an application out of the /Applications folder in modern versions of Mac OS X, you will end up creating an alias of the app instead?
What if you want to move an application out of the Applications folder of MacOS, and put the app somewhere else?
This behavior is a security feature that was introduced to the Mac all the way back in Mac OS X in Lion but persists through today, which is intended to help prevent accidentally deleting or moving apps, and in some ways it’s convenient way to quickly make an app alias. But what if you actually want to move an application out of the /Applications/ directory, to another location?
Moving an Application out of the Applications Folder on Mac OS
If you want to move an app out of the Applications folder, how you do so is easy: just hold down the Command key while dragging the app out of the folder.
This will allow it to pop out of the containing folder and go to the new destination.
You may need to authenticate with a system admin password and login to be able to make the change, depending on what version of MacOS and what your security settings are on the individual Mac.
The only real exception to this trick is if the applications destination is the Trash, because you will continue to need to enter the administrator password if you attempt to uninstall an app by dragging it into the Trash can the old fashioned way. That’s also a security feature of Mac OS X, intended to prevent accidental removal of apps.

I just installed OS X 10.1 after getting a bigger hard drive. I’ve created a separate partition for Applications. How can I move OS X’s Applications folder permanently into this partition (besides drag and drop which just copies the folder)? I want all my applications to launch from this specific partition. How much of a hassle will it be to accomplish this?
Thanks for your help. I’ve been lurking around these boards for about a month now (ever since we got OS X but have been waiting for the new HD) and it seems to be a very helpful place around here.

If you can copy something you must be able to delete something?
Press the «delete» button after you have copied the files?
But I dont know, I dont have a Mac yet.
Im still stuck with my PC shit. Grr.

but copying the folder to the other partition and deleting the old folder won’t set all references to the old folder over to the new one. i want to know if it’s possible to move the Applications folder as well as all the references to it (such as the button for Applications in the Finder), or would I have to change them manually.

I think you will have problems if you move the Applications folder. I believe that OS X requires it to reside at: /Applications and that having it at, say: /Volumes/AnotherPartition/Applications might confuse some of the built-in utilities. I think this is the one place where OS X just needs to have apps in a certain location.
I might be way off here.

Note that a symoblic link is VERY, VERY different from a Mac alias, and a Mac alias usually doesn’t work in situations like these.
1: Copy your Applications folder to its new location.
3: Go back to the Finder, and find the place where you put the new Applications folder. This is where you are going to install new applications. Drag that folder to the Terminal window you made. The UNIX path to your new applications folder should have been inputed into the Terminal.
4: Type » /Applications » without the quotes, but with the first space.
5. Just press return, and let your command execute. You should now have a UNIX symbolic link named «Applications» at the root level of your OS X partition. If you double click it, it should take you to your new Applications folder. Software Update and most other processes will most likely follow this symbolic link to the new place.
6. If you want to make it invisible, just grab ResEdit or something to make it invisible. Note that if you put a «.» in front of the name it will make the alias invisible, but then because the name is different, Software Update and other such utilities will probably not be able to find the Applications folder so in this case ResEdit is the recommended way to make it invisible.

I think the more Unix-y solution would be to mount your other hard drive at /Applications. That way everyone thinks they’re still residing at /Applications (they are, in fact), but it’s physically on another drive.
Now, how to do that. I forget. If someone could fill us in again, that’d be great. I did it once when I set up a separate partition for my swap file (wish I hadn’t though).

by placing the required line into /etc/fstab. it is picked up by /etc/rc around line 95
take a look at man fstab to get the idea of the required syntax; use mount to find out the device node of the partition you want to mount. is ugly.

Found this application the other day in /usr/sbin/ that seems to be tailored for disk manipulations. It’s undocumented in the man pages but the usage error output gives a fair description and some examples.

Ive been trying to find instructions to move my apps folder that were easy to follow for a while now, thanks for posting this. Now the reason why im doing this is because my startup volume has only 300 mb avail. so i need to move it to my other partition which has 7gb avail. (i know i need a new HD) I need alot more than that acutally. but this will be a temp fix.
so i tried step one and was confronted with the message «One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?»
so i Canceled the copy.
What i want to do is move everything in that folder without resetting the permissions. if you familiar with Carbon Copy it copies disks, without changing any permisions, i think this is what is necessary here.

How to move an app to a different page
You start with one page of apps. To make a new page, touch and hold an app until the apps jiggle, then drag an app to the right edge of the screen. You might need to wait a second for the new page to appear. To delete a page, consolidate all of your apps to another Home Screen. When there are no apps present the page will delete.
When you have more than one page, a bright dot in a row of dots above the Dock shows you which page you’re on. You can move an app to a different page and create new pages:
If there are dots to the left or right of the bright dot, you can drag an app to the right side of the screen to move the app to the next page in that direction. Or swipe left to see the apps on that page.
If there are no dots to the right of the bright dot, dragging an app to that side of the screen makes a new page.

1. Языковые файлы и папки
Приложения для Mac всегда поставляются с языковыми файлами – их будет ровно столько, на сколько языков переведена программа.
Чтобы увидеть их, зайдите в Finder, откройте вкладку Программы и кликните правой кнопкой мыши по любому приложение, а в появившемся контекстном меню выберите вариант Показать содержимое пакета.

Нередко языковые файлы удаляют – ради того, чтобы освободить немного свободного места. Именно немного – сканирование программой CleanMyMac X показывает, что удаление этих файлов даст вам незначительное количество свободного пространства.
В общем, сильно сэкономить не получится – а вот получить проблемы вроде зависаний и вылета некоторых старых приложений Microsoft Office и Adobe вполне реально. К тому же, для удаления системных языковых пакетов macOS требуется отключение встроенной защиты System Integrity Protection – а вот этого делать настоятельно не рекомендуется.
2. Папки в разделе /private/var
macOS создает файлы кэша на пользовательском и системном уровнях, чтобы ускорить систему. Кэш и временные файлы, расположенные в /Library/Caches, находятся в открытом доступе, их можно удалять даже без помощи сторонних приложений.
Но есть и такие места, которые управляются исключительно операционной системой, и вам они даже не видны. Иногда они занимают приличное место на диске, так что логично выозникает как минимум желание с этим разобраться.
Чтобы открыть /private/var, откройте Finder, нажмите ⌘Cmd + ⇧Shift + G и введите в адресной строке /private/var/folders. Новая вкладка в Finder будет открыта незамедлительно.
Для перехода к системному кэшу и временным файлам запустите Терминал и введите следующую команду:
Вы увидите папки с названиями из двух букв. Если углубиться в них, вы окажетесь в папках с названием уже из одной буквы. В папке С «живет» кэш (от Cache), В папке Т – временные файлы (Temporary), а данные пользователя находятся в O.
Сканирование с помощью OmniDiskSweeper показывает, что размер /private/var/folders составляет 1 ГБ, а всей /private/var – чуть больше 4 ГБ. Это нормально – беспокоиться стоит, если эти директории «весят» более 10 ГБ.
Но удалять файлы из /private/var вручную нельзя. Вы можете случайно уничтожить что-то «не то» и повредить жизненно важные для работы macOS файлы, данные о документах. Да это и не нужно – достаточно перезагрузить Mac (меню → Перезагрузить…). Перезагрузка автоматически запускает механизмы очистки кэша. В результате удаляется ненужный контент, кэш и временные файлы в /tmp, /private/var, и /private/var/folders.
Если они не удаляются, загрузите Mac в безопасном режиме. macOS подключить дополнительные встроенные механизмы для уничтожения кэша и временных файлов. После этого можно будет загрузиться уже в обычном режиме и проверить свободное место на диске.
Другие важные папки в /private/var
3. Папка Система и Библиотеки
Создатели macOS предусмотрели в ней несколько папок с названием Library (Библиотеки). Они имеют одно и то же название, но располагаются в разных частях ОС, и отличаются друг от друга по функциональным возможностям.
Всего есть три папки:

Основная и находящаяся в разделе System (Система) папки Library (Библиотеки) влияют практически на каждый аспект в системе. Например, в Системе находятся папки с файлами, которые необходимы macOS для работы. Модифицировать их имеет право только сама операционная система. Соответственно, пользователю здесь делать нечего.
4. User Library
Папка с тем же названием в «домашней» директории – это ваша персональная библиотека данных. Здесь также находится сама система, сторонние файлы поддержки, настройки, а также данные почтового клиента Apple Mail, закладки и история Safari, записи из календаря и многое другое. Есть здесь и папка, которую время от времени рекомендуется чистить. Но это совсем не значит, что «трогать» можно всё – как раз наоборот.
/Library/Application Support и системные, и сторонние приложения сохраняют файлы поддержки (обычно в подпапке) с регистрационными данными и информацией о совершенных сессиях. Удалять вручную их нельзя, для этого есть специальное приложение AppCleaner.
/Library/Preferences хранятся настройки всех системных и сторонних приложений. Опять-таки, вручную удалять их нельзя – если это сделать, приложение вернется к изначальным настройкам или будет вылетать при запуске. Для очистки этих данных используйте уже упомянутый AppCleaner.
/Library/Mobile Documents – де-факто папка iCloud. Здесь «живут» документы, данные приложений из iOS и многое, многое другое. Здесь тоже лучше ничего не делать… хотя очень хочется – ведь эта папка занимает много места, если вы пользуетесь iCloud. Чтобы уменьшить её размер, удалите файлы в папке iCloud через Finder.
/Library/Containers располагаются файлы поддержки, кэшированные данные и временные файлы для приложений из Mac App Store. Так как приложения из магазина приложений работают исключительно в «песочнице», они не могут записывать данные в какое-либо другое место на диске. Как вы уже догадались, вручную ничего удалять здесь нельзя. Что делать? Просто переустановить приложение, данные от которых занимают слишком много места.
5. Скрытые папки в «домашней» директории
В частности, не следует модифицировать и тем более удалять следующие папки:
Обязательно сделайте бэкап
Обычному пользователю малоинтересны «скрытые» папки – в конце концов, в них не лежат деньги :). Но если свободного места на диске становится все меньше, самые отчаянные юзеры все-таки могут начать эксперименты со «слишком большими» папками.
Если вы один из них, и уверены в том, что делаете – все равно предварительно сделайте резервную копию системы и сохраните её на внешнем диске. В том случае, если все-таки возникнут какие-либо проблемы с системой, вы сравнительно легко сможете всё восстановить в прежнем виде, и невинный эксперимент не закончится потерей ценных документов и данных в приложениях.
