What is a Promise Ring?

There are big and small differences between a promise ring and an engagement ring. Some are material — like the size of the diamond or gemstone and expense — and some are emotional.
Simply put, you give or get an engagement ring when you want to spend your lives together, after the proposal has been enthusiastically accepted. The reasons for giving and getting promise rings vary, and often only the wearer and giver know what the promise is.

What the promise ring symbolizes between couples is highly individual, but most often it represents love and commitment. That could be a promise to someday become engaged at an unspecified time, perhaps after graduation, the end of a stint overseas or when it’s easier financially.

If an engagement ring comes along in the future, the promise ring often moves over to the opposite hand.
Other relationships
Promise rings can be exchanged between friends, pledging friendship forever. Promise rings may also be given by a parent to a child as a way of saying “I’ll love you forever.” Promise rings may also be known as purity rings, and represent a pledge of abstinence. They can be worn as a promise of anything, really, like a commitment to faith, to a goal, or a pledge to break a bad habit.
Other considerations
Promise rings typically are smaller and subtler than engagement rings, and may or may not be worn on the traditional wedding band finger. Diamonds are popular, but in smaller sizes or clusters, or with gemstones — usually the focus is not on the diamond, but on the overall design.
Metals, too, are often different. While 18K and 14K gold and platinum lead the way for engagement rings and wedding bands, 10K gold or sterling silver are more affordable and popular options for promise rings.

What Is a Promise Ring?
A promise ring is a ring given from one person to another in a romantic relationship to signify their fidelity and commitment, often (but not always) preceding an engagement. At its most essential, giving a promise ring symbolizes one partner’s devotion to the relationship, and accepting the ring does so for the recipient.
Promise Ring Meaning
As the name suggests, promise rings represent a promise made between two people, but the specific, personal meaning can differ from couple to couple. «The appeal of the promise ring is derived largely from the many meanings it can represent,» says Kimberly Kanary, vice president of public relations and social media at Kay Jewelers. «Many couples give or wear promise rings specifically to signify a future engagement, while others do so as more of a general symbol of devotion to one another.»
«You’re promising yourself to each other,» explains Brooke Brinkman, vice president of marketing and communications at Simon G. Jewelry, who received a promise ring from her now-husband a year and a half before they got engaged. While in Brinkman’s case, the ring was a promise there’d be an engagement in the future, that’s not always the case. «I often think of promise rings as similar to the mid-century tradition of giving your high-school sweetheart your class ring or pin,» says Elizabeth Woolf-Willis, GG, AJP, marketing coordinator at Simon G. Jewelry. «Now you’re more than just ‘dating’—there’s a physical symbol of the relationship to show the outside world.»
A History of Promise Rings
According to Brinkman, the idea of giving a ring as a promise of love and affection dates back several hundred years—and the tradition of wearing a ring to demonstrate loyalty and fidelity dates back to ancient times. There’s evidence that Roman brides wore engagement bands in the 2nd century BC. Posy rings, engraved with romantic poems, date back to 16th-century England, while Acrostic rings—spelling out a word in gemstones (for example, a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby and diamond spelling «regard»)—were popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras.
Modern promise rings have only resurfaced as a mainstream trend within the last decade or so, largely thanks to the publicity surrounding celebrity promise rings (think: the Jonas Brothers and celeb couple Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth).
Is a Promise Ring the Same as a Purity Ring?
Sometimes, but not always. When Joe Jonas told Details in a 2008 interview that he and his brothers’ rings symbolized, «a promise to ourselves and to God that we’ll stay pure ’till marriage,» promise rings became synonymous with purity rings.
But Brinkman wants to make a distinction: «Some people have gotten the terminology confused. When you talk about abstinence—and a ring is given by a parent to a child, or to oneself—it’s called a purity ring.» Promise rings, on the other hand, are typically given as a token of commitment within the confines of a romantic relationship.
Promise Ring Timing and Etiquette
Although promise rings aren’t synonymous with wedding rings, they shouldn’t be treated lightly. «A promise ring should be given after a couple has dated for a significant amount of time—a year or more—to show how serious they are about their relationship,» says Kelly McLeskey-Dolata, founder of event planning and design company A Savvy Event in the San Francisco Bay Area. So, it goes without saying that you should only give or wear a promise ring when you’re ready for the commitment.
Brinkman has noticed the rise in popularity of promise rings echoes a growing trend for couples to happily cohabit and/or marry later in life. While they may not be ready—or even want—to commit to marriage, a promise ring denotes that their commitment extends beyond casually dating or just living together.
Are They Just for Women—Or Are There Guy Promise Rings Too?
When you hear «promise ring,» your mind might immediately think of a man giving one to a woman. But guy promise rings are quite common. Remember we mentioned Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth? Before getting married in 2018, both Cyrus and Hemsworth wore promise rings. Some couples give promise rings to each other. Other times one person will give their partner one to pledge their commitment and demonstrate how much they value the relationship. The point is, anyone can give or wear a promise ring.
What Finger Does a Promise Ring Go On?
Which finger—or even which hand—you wear your promise ring on is entirely up to you. Promise rings can be worn on any finger, Brinkman says, adding that they’re sometimes even worn on a chain around one’s neck. The most common way to wear a promise ring is on the ring finger—on the left hand if you’re not married, and on the right hand if you are married. The reason they’re typically worn on the ring finger of the left hand comes from the ancient superstition (that’s unfortunately not anatomically correct) that there’s a vein that runs directly from that finger to the heart.
What Should a Promise Ring Look Like?
In terms of style, anything goes when it comes to promise rings. Seriously, there are no rules or requirements here. Popular promise ring themes and styles include hearts or intertwined designs to represent a couple’s union, Claddagh rings and eternity rings, as well as bands with a mosaic or composite of stones. «Engagement rings have such a sacred nature; promise rings are often viewed as more of a fashion piece,» says Brinkman, who cautions against choosing a style that might compete with an engagement ring—if that’s your eventual intention. «They both serve a purpose,» Brinkman says. «You want to make sure they don’t look exactly the same.»

How to Give a Promise Ring
Another thing there’s no hard-and-fast rule for? How to give a promise ring. It doesn’t come with the same traditional expectations of an elaborate, planned proposal where the proposer gets down on one knee. Promise rings are most often given as a birthday, Valentine’s Day or holiday gift, McLeskey-Dolata says. Even a romantic dinner for two is the perfect place for this meaningful exchange. «In the case of a promise ring, it’s more of a conversation about the meaning behind it, and the promise that’s being made,» Brinkman explains. «Whereas for an engagement, the focus is on the ring and the ‘moment.'»
What Happens to the Ring if You Break Up?
While promise rings are intended to signify a lifelong vow, things happen and relationships change. In this case, even if the pledge is rescinded, promise rings aren’t always returned. In short? «It depends on the nature of the breakup,» Brinkman says.

Promise rings have been around for a surprisingly long time. The earliest examples of promise ring first surfacing in 17th century England. The promise rings can come in many different styles. There is no convention on which – if any – precious stones are used. Some are even engraved with poetry or other phrases on the subject of love.
In the US, we’ve been giving promise rings for as long as high school kids have been giving class rings to each other. These gestures signify a blossoming and committed relationship, showing that love transcends money.
What is a Promise Ring?
A Promise Ring is a ring that is given as a commitment between two people to get engaged, and later on, to marry. When given, it’s an indication that the giver is willing to commit to the relationship. The acceptance of the ring is an acknowledgment that the feelings are mutual.
Although a Promise Ring may seem very similar to an Engagement Ring, it is fact completely separate. Keep reading to learn the technical differences.
Promise Ring vs. Engagement Ring
It is important to note that a Promise Ring is not an Engagement Ring! The actual jewelry used could be identical, but the meaning behind the rings are not the same at all.
There are many differences between the two types of rings even though the rings themselves may be the same (see below). Here are some of the more common differences between them:
The Promise Ring allows a commitment to be made without the pressure that comes with an engagement. It helps show that the future of the relationship is secure.
It may also be that the two people in the relationship don’t see marriage as a necessary formality. They may be happy for the commitment to be finalized without the pomp and ceremony – and cost! – of a wedding. The only condition of a Promise Ring is that it must actually promise something!

The Giving Of A Promise Ring
There’s no real etiquette or rules around giving a promise ring.
It isn’t a proposal. It doesn’t necessarily signify a new period in the relationship, and so it can be given when it’s comfortable to do so. A romantic dinner is nice, but watching TV or during a walk in the park is just as appropriate.
It’s also not necessary for the giver to place the ring on the recipient’s finger as, again, we’re not talking about a wedding proposal. Of course, if a finger is offered, then there’s no harm in putting the ring on it.
Surprising her and bending down on one knee is probably a bad idea as she may assume that you are proposing.
Promise Rings vs. Purity Rings
Although the two types of rings always get mixed up with each other, it is important to realize, that in truth, a Purity Ring is not a Promise Rings. They actually have very little in common.
Both rings indicate a commitment, but the types of commitment they represent are entirely different.
In the same way that all Jacuzzis are hot tubs, but not all hot tubs are Jacuzzis. All Purity Rings are Promise Rings, but not all Promise Rings are Purity Rings. I hope that this example helped…
Which Hand to Wear the Promise Ring?
Promise Rings have been traditionally worn on the ring finger on the right hand. In the past 20 or 30 years, many people have started to wear the ring on the left hand in lieu of an engagement ring. When an engagement ring is received, the Promise Ring will then be moved to the right hand or taken off entirely.
The point, though, is that it really doesn’t matter. A Promise Ring can be worn on any finger, on a chain around the neck or even on a toe. There literally are no rules for how and where Promise Rings should be worn. The significance behind the giving of the ring is far more important than where it appears on the body.
Promise Ring Designs
As mentioned in the introduction to this article, Promise Rings come in all shapes and sizes. Early versions would have inscriptions on them of poems or bible verses. Later came lavish precious stone arrangements to bring a personal message to the recipient. It’s unusual to have a plain ring, although examples do exist which have Celtic or other cultural patterns engraved onto it.
Today’s designs tend to straddle both ends of the genre somewhat, with small gemstones ring becoming more common, but usually in a more modest presentation than would be seen in an engagement or eternity ring.

Теперь мы знаем, что такое Промис и его терминологию, давайте вернемся назад к практической части промисов.
Создаем Промис
В большинстве случаев вы будете просто использовать промисы, а не создавать их, но все же важно знать как они создаются.
Мы создали новый промис, используя конструктор Промисов, он принимает один аргумент, обратный вызов, также известный как исполнительная функция, которая принимает 2 обратных вызова, resolve и reject.

Если промис был выполнен, то вызывается successCallback со значением, переданным в resolve(). И если промис был отклонен, то вызывается failureCallback со значением, переданным в reject().
.catch() синтаксис: promise.catch(failureCallback)

Несмотря на то, что это будет работать нормально, это считается плохим стилем и делает код менее читабельным. Если у вас есть последовательность промисов для выполнения, будет лучше ставить их один за другим, нежели вкладывать один внутрь другого.
Promise.all( )
Этот метод берет массив промисов и возвращает новый промис, который будет выполненным, когда все промисы внутри массива выполнены или отклонен, как только встречается промис, который отклоняется. Например:

Тут мы имеем два промиса, где один выполняется через 1 секунду, а другой отклоняется через 1.5 секунды. Как только первый промис выполнен, возвращенный из Promise.race() промис будет иметь статус выполненного не дожидаясь статуса второго промиса.
Здесь data, которая передается в then() является значением первого, выполненного, промиса.
